The position will focus on teaching Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry lecture and lab depending on departmental needs. Preceptors are recent chemistry Ph.D. graduates interested in developing their career as chemical educators. Preceptors participate in undergraduate teaching, with specific responsibilities that may include guiding discussion and laboratory sections, assisting instructors of record to design and deliver course content and assessment tasks, contributing to the training of graduate-student teaching assistants, participating in the development of new laboratory modules, conducting regular review sessions, and grading. Preceptors gain the professional skills required for a career in chemical education by working closely with faculty members. ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT

Faculty, Sections and Departments

The Faculty of Science and Medicine comprises a Science Section and a Medicine Section. The Science Section comprises six departments and six institutes, while the Medicine Section comprises five departments and two institutes (see https://www.unifr.ch/scimed/en/units/).

The faculty is presided over by the dean, who is elected by the Faculty Council for a three-year term. Each section is led by a president who is elected by the other professors for a two-year term. Major decisions are made by the Faculty Council and Section Councils, which comprise professors, teaching staff and student representatives.

The future appointee will join the AMI, which is part of the Science Section. The Science Section’s other six departments are:

Teaching and Languages

The Adolphe Merkle Institute teaching differs from that of the other departments within the Faculty of Science and Medicine. While the departments are all responsible for specific courses of study, the AMI does not offer its own. AMI professors mainly teach at the master’s level in the chemistry, physics, medicine, and biology departments. Their teaching load amounts to half that of professors in other departments (i.e., three hours per week).

Teaching at the master’s and PhD level, where the new appointee is expected to teach, classes are usually taught in English. During term time, the appointee is expected to dedicate three hours per week to teaching. Candidates must be able to teach in English. Colloquial skills in French and German would be advantageous.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FUNDING

Department and location

The AMI is located in three dedicated buildings on the University of Fribourg’s Pérolles campus. The other Faculty of Science and Medicine buildings are within short walking distance. The campus is also home to the School of Engineering and Architecture. The appointee will have access to AMI’s infrastructure, as well as that of the Faculty of Science and Medicine.

Infrastructure

The AMI offers outstanding facilities for soft-matter nanoscience, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, confocal microscopy, well-equipped polymer chemistry laboratories, cell culture facilities, bioprinting and a clean room with lithography equipment. The AMI occupies three buildings, two refurbished and one newly built, dating from 2014.

Financial support

Funding of the successful candidate is highly flexible, with base funding provided by the Adolphe Merkle Foundation and the Canton of Fribourg. The position comes with a substantial start-up package. The appointee is expected to actively seek external funding to support their research and research group.

In principle, the review will be conducted across all research areas selected by the applicant, and one of these departments will become the appointee's affiliation. However, the selection committee reserves the right to determine a different research area for review or departmental affiliation if deemed appropriate.

Allocation, Laboratory Space & Accommodation

Successful individuals will be allocated an office and laboratory space on campus.

If laboratory space and research equipment are deemed necessary based on the research plan submitted with the application, support will be provided for their allocation. Allocated office and laboratory space will generally be located within the Graduate School of Science (Aobayama Campus).

Appointees are eligible to move into university accommodation if there are any vacancies.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual salary for the appointment will be determined in accordance with Tohoku University's employment regulations and will be based on the experience and performance of the candidate. The gross annual salary will be approximately:

Assistant professor: 6 to 8 million JPY
Associate professor: up to 10 million JPY

Special Funding & Duties
This recruitment is part of the university-wide effort to increase research activities on campus as a University for International Research Excellence. As such, selected individuals will be provided with the following funding and are expected to meet the following duties:

Funding:

Start-up Fund: To facilitate a smooth research start, a start-up fund of up to 10 million JPY will be allocated in the first fiscal year of employment. The final maximum amount will be determined based on a review of the submitted "Research Activity Plan” in Required Documents.
Basic Research Fund: From the first to the sixth year of appointment, up to 4 million JPY per year will be provided as a basic research fund, based on the Research Activity Plan. (Please note: The allocation for the fifth and sixth years may be subject to revision following an interim evaluation.)

Duties & Expectations:

External Funding: Application for additional peer-reviewed grants and other third-party funding, including funding and revenue from joint and endowed research through industry collaboration, is required.
Publications: The selected individual is strongly expected to produce several high impact publications, such as academic papers and books.
Evaluation (Tenure Track):
- An interim evaluation will be conducted by the end of the fourth year of appointment.
- A formal tenure review will take place by the sixth year. Candidates who successfully pass the tenure review will be appointed as associate professor or professor (permanent position).

Please note: In cases where the appointee takes leave such as childcare leave, the tenure track term may be extended and the tenure review or term expiration may be postponed within the scope of the leave period, if deemed necessary.

Welfare

Successful individuals will be enrolled as a member of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mutual Aid Association which will also provide health insurance for any dependents. Tohoku University will also provide pension insurance, employment insurance as well as industrial accident compensation insurance.

Working Hours: Discretionary labor system for professional work. The standard working day is 7 hours and 45 minutes (basic hours: 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM), with working hours left to the individual's discretion.

Holidays: Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, and New Year holidays (December 29 - January 3)

Annual Paid Leave

Employees are entitled to twenty days annual paid leave per year. The number of days provided is reckoned as of January 1st. Each year, twenty days are added to any remaining paid leave from the previous calendar year (up to twenty days). Annual leave for the first year of employment is calculated based on the start date (e.g., a start date of April 1st would provide 15 days for the remaining nine months of the calendar year).

Additional Information Educational & administrative duties

Appointees will engage in educational duties in mentoring early-career researchers, supervising doctoral theses and providing lectures to undergraduate students.

As a member of the Graduate School, the appointee will also be required to cooperate in some administrative duties for the department or graduate school. However, care will be taken to ensure sufficient time for research, in recognition of the appointee’s tenure track status and goal of becoming an internationally outstanding researcher.

1) Contexte & objectifs

- Les CSR montrent une forte variabilité (plastiques, papiers/cartons, textiles, fraction fine, etc.) et un enjeu majeur de déchloration/qualité des produits.

- Comparer la pyrolyse en réacteur fermé et lit fluidisé éclaire l’effet du temps de séjour des vapeurs et de la température sur rendements, composition des gaz/huiles, et qualité du biochar.

- Des zéolithes (ex. HZSM-5 modifiée) sont pertinentes pour aromatisation/déchloration des huiles issues de CSR ¹.

Objectifs spécifiques

Recherche biblio : Cartographier la composition de CSR et leurs produits de pyrolyse (huiles/gaz/char)².
Caractérisation multi-techniques (ATG (proximate–ultimate), bombe calorimétrique, DRX, FTIR, SEM-EDS, porosité BET…).
Travail expérimental : Expérimenter en réacteur fermé et en lit fluidisé : prétraitements (dont déchloration), effets T et temps de séjour des vapeurs (VRT), et étude catalytique sur zéolithe modifiée.

2) Programme de travail

2.1. Recherche bibliographique (sem. 1–3)

CSR/SRF : définitions & classes (EN 15359), variabilité, contaminants (Cl, métaux) ; filières d’usage.
Prétraitements/déchloration (lavage, Ca(OH)₂, traitements thermiques) & catalyse zéolithique (HZSM-5, versions nano/hiérarchiques, dopages).
Produits de pyrolyse de CSR (techniques utilsiées (GC-MS,..), familles chimiques majeures, gaz légers, qualité des chars).
Réacteurs : identifier les réacteurs les plus utilisés pour le traitement de CSR
Conditions opératoires : Etudier l’effet du temps de séjour des vapeurs et la température du réacteur sur la distribution produite.

2.2. Caractérisation des échantillons (sem. 2–6)

Échantillons et analyses :

- ATG/DTG (N₂) 25-800 °C, 5°C/min → profils de dévolatilisation, paramètres cinétiques

- Proximate/ultimate (cendres, volatils, C-H-N-S-Cl), analyse des chlore & soluble.

- Morphologie/porosité : BET, SEM-EDS (impuretés, Cl-rich domains), DRX (carbonates/halogénures), FTIR.

2.3. Étude expérimentale (sem. 5–16)

Prétraitements (en fonction de la partie biblio)

1. Déchloration en amont (prétraitement du CSR)

- Lavage à l’eau ou eau alcaline (Ca(OH)₂, NaOH, NaHCO₃) : permet d’extraire une grande partie du chlore soluble (NaCl, KCl) avant pyrolyse → moins de chlore passe dans l’huile/charbon.

- Traitement thermique doux (200–300 °C) : volatilisation partielle du HCl lié au PVC avant pyrolyse principale.

Ces techniques ne déchlorent pas directement l’huile, mais réduisent fortement sa teneur en Cl à la source (Pour plus d’information, voir article Chen et al. (2022)³.

2. Déchloration in situ pendant pyrolyse

- Ajout de sorbants basiques (CaO, Ca(OH)₂, MgO, dolomie) dans le lit : fixation du chlore sous forme de CaCl₂/MgCl₂ solides, donc moins de chlore volatil vers l’huile.

- Vaporisation de l’HCl par une torrefaction (entre 200-300°C)

- Utiliser des catalyseurs zéolithiques (HZSM-5, dopée Ni/Zn) : favorisent la formation d’aromatiques légers, tout en réduisant la fraction chlorée dans les goudrons/huiles (pour plus d’information, voir article de Cueto et al.(2023)¹.

Travail expérimental

- Réacteur fermé (batch) :masse utilisée de l’ordre de 1-2g, débit d’azote environ 200mL/min, et température entre 450–650 °C

- Lit fluidisé (sable, Zéolithes, CaO, MgO...., 0.2–0.5 mm) : 1-2g/min, température entre 450–650 °C.

Tous ces paramètres sont à ajuster en fonction de la littérature (partie 1).

Analyses des produits

Gaz : micro-GC / GC-TCD-FID ; éventuellement FTIR (par sac d’échantillonnage).

Huiles : GC-MS + GC-FID (familles chimiques)....

Biochar : BET, SEM-EDS, DRX, FTIR, suivi Cl et métaux.

Contexte

La biofiltration est largement utilisée dans les stations d’épuration de grandes agglomérations. Sa compacité et ses excellentes performances de traitement en font une solution privilégiée pour répondre aux exigences croissantes de qualité de rejet, dans un contexte de limitation des surfaces disponibles.

Cependant, ces procédés présentent deux défis majeurs : une consommation énergétique élevée liée à l’aération et des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, notamment de protoxyde d’azote (N₂O), qui contribuent significativement à leur empreinte carbone.

Le transfert gaz-liquide joue un rôle central dans ces phénomènes : il conditionne à la fois les performances environnementales et les coûts d’exploitation liés à l’énergie. Une meilleure compréhension et modélisation de ces mécanismes sont donc essentielles pour optimiser le fonctionnement et la durabilité des procédés de biofiltration.

Mené conjointement par INRAE-PROSE et la Direction Innovation du SIAAP, ce stage s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme Mocopée, dont l’un des axes vise à améliorer la modélisation et le contrôle des procédés d’épuration.

Le travail portera sur l’amélioration de la représentation du transfert gaz-liquide dans les modèles de biofiltration à grande échelle, en s’appuyant sur des données opérationnelles.

Objectifs et démarche

Des corrélations issues d’expériences réalisées à l’échelle pilote permettent de relier la rétention gazeuse (correspondant au volume de gaz retenu au sein du procédé) à l’encrassement du lit filtrant et aux vitesses de gaz et de liquide injectés dans le procédé. Elles intègrent pour la première fois l’influence de l’encrassement du lit filtrant sur la dispersion du gaz, un aspect jusqu’alors négligé dans la modélisation des procédés de biofiltration.

L’objectif du stage est d’évaluer leur validité à l’échelle industrielle en les intégrant dans le modèle mécanistique de biofiltration SimBioN₂O (Fiat et al., 2019), et d’analyser leur impact sur la représentation du transfert gaz-liquide et la prédiction des performances de traitement et des émissions gazeuses.

Les principales étapes sont :

- Prise en main du modèle SimBioN₂O : compréhension de sa structure (codé sous Simulink–Matlab), des corrélations existantes décrivant le transfert gaz-liquide et des jeux de données expérimentales disponibles.

- Sélection des périodes de calibration et d’évaluation du modèle : identification de séquences présentant des variations marquées de charge polluante, pertes de charge et débit d’air.

- Simulations comparatives :

- établissement d’une cnfiguration de référence avec le modèle actuel ;

- intégratin des crrélations enrichies, calibratin minimale du cefficient de transfert volumique (k_La) et simulatin des mêmes périodes.

- Analyse et ajustement des paramètres :

- comparaison quantitative des prédictions des concentrations de polluants (NH₄⁺, NO₂⁻, NO₃⁻);

- identification des conditions où les écarts sont les plus marqués ;

- analyse de sensibilité et calibration finale des paramètres associés aux nouvelles corrélations.

- Rédaction d’un rapport et présentation régulière lors de réunions hebdomadaires avec l’équipe d’encadrement INRAE-SIAAP.
