Your Responsibilities:

Support the development and continuous improvement of the IMPRS program structures.
Coordinate the full recruitment and admission process for PhD candidates.

We are offering an interesting PhD position – Learning Tailored Iterative Algorithms for Accelerating AC Power Flow Computations (HDS-LEE graduate school)

Your Job:

Energy systems engineering heavily relies on efficient numerical algorithms. In this HDS‑LEE project, we will use machine learning (ML) along with data from previously solved problem instances to solve new, yet similar, instances more efficiently than with general purpose algorithms such as Newton`s method. In particular, we aim to develop a neural network architecture that will allow us to accelerate solving AC power flow (AC‑PF) computations, potentially facilitating real‑time contingency analysis, rapid design‑space exploration, and on‑line operational optimization of power systems.

Your tasks in detail:

Become familiar with our previously developed neural network superstructure for learning iterative algorithms
Extend the superstructure to tackle AC-PF problems of different complexities and assess its convergence in inference
Investigate scaling and performance bottlenecks
Explore hybrid ML-classical approaches, the application of meta learning, and the integration of convex optimization layers
Increase inference efficiency (e.g., GPU acceleration) and assess the applicability domain of learned algorithms
Publish and present your results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences
Supervise student theses

Your Profile:

Excellent Master`s degree with a strong academic background in computational engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering or a related field
Strong background in numerical methods and machine learning

GENERAL CONDITIONS

The Faculty of Science and Medicine is inviting applications for the position of Professor of Data-Driven Materials Discovery at the Adolphe Merkle Institute (AMI). The AMI is a scientifically independent institute supported by a private foundation and integrated into the Faculty of Science and Medicine of the University of Fribourg. The successful candidate will have an exceptional track record of international research excellence in data-driven materials discovery, appropriate to their career stage. Their research programme should encompass artificial intelligence, machine learning and data-driven discovery methods applied to materials such as polymers, colloids, self-assembled systems, biomaterials and living materials. The Adolphe Merkle Institute’s research strategy emphasises soft nanomaterials, bioinspiration, and the integration of fundamental and application-oriented research to enable the development of new technologies. ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT

Faculty, Sections and Departments

The Faculty of Science and Medicine comprises a Science Section and a Medicine Section. The Science Section comprises six departments and six institutes, while the Medicine Section comprises five departments and two institutes (see https://www.unifr.ch/scimed/en/units/).

The faculty is presided over by the dean, who is elected by the Faculty Council for a three-year term. Each section is led by a president who is elected by the other professors for a two-year term. Major decisions are made by the Faculty Council and Section Councils, which comprise professors, teaching staff and student representatives.

The future appointee will join the AMI, which is part of the Science Section. The Science Section’s other six departments are:

The AMI currently comprises five chairs and two non-tenured junior groups, each conducting independent research. The AMI is presided over by a director. Major decisions are made by the AMI executive board, which consists of all professors.

Research focus

The AMI is an interdisciplinary institute in soft matter science. Its five current chairs focus on the following areas:

The future appointee will establish an independent research group in their area of expertise and will be expected to actively seek external funding to support their research and group.

Teaching and Languages

The Adolphe Merkle Institute teaching differs from that of the other departments within the Faculty of Science and Medicine. While the departments are all responsible for specific courses of study, the AMI does not offer its own. AMI professors mainly teach at the master’s level in the chemistry, physics, medicine, and biology departments. Their teaching load amounts to half that of professors in other departments (i.e., three hours per week).

Teaching at the master’s and PhD level, where the new appointee is expected to teach, classes are usually taught in English. During term time, the appointee is expected to dedicate three hours per week to teaching. Candidates must be able to teach in English. Colloquial skills in French and German would be advantageous.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FUNDING

Department and location

The AMI is located in three dedicated buildings on the University of Fribourg’s Pérolles campus. The other Faculty of Science and Medicine buildings are within short walking distance. The campus is also home to the School of Engineering and Architecture. The appointee will have access to AMI’s infrastructure, as well as that of the Faculty of Science and Medicine.

Infrastructure

The AMI offers outstanding facilities for soft-matter nanoscience, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, confocal microscopy, well-equipped polymer chemistry laboratories, cell culture facilities, bioprinting and a clean room with lithography equipment. The AMI occupies three buildings, two refurbished and one newly built, dating from 2014.

Financial support

Funding of the successful candidate is highly flexible, with base funding provided by the Adolphe Merkle Foundation and the Canton of Fribourg. The position comes with a substantial start-up package. The appointee is expected to actively seek external funding to support their research and research group.

The salary is determined according to the Canton of Fribourg’s salary grid. Details will be negotiated when the position is offered.

The Paris Brain Institute (Institut du Cerveau) is an internationally renowned institute dedicated to advancing understanding of the brain and improving brain health across the whole spectrum of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It is home to 29 research teams bringing together over 1000 personnel, including 150 tenured researchers, 200 technical staff and 300 students and post-docs. The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with expertise including basic neuroscience, clinical neurology, population neuroscience, mathematics and computer science. It has 12 cutting-edge core facilities for data generation across various scales and modalities (genomics, proteomics, imaging, behavior...). The Institute is located on the campus of the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, in central Paris, the largest hospital in Europe for brain disorders and many hospital clinicians are also investigators of the Institute. As part of its scientific strategy development plan, the Paris Brain Institute has recently launched an ambitious center for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science, currently gathering about 100 people with the objective to scale up to 150. The aim of the Center is to make the Paris Brain Institute an international hub in AI and data science for neuroscience, resulting in disruptive methodological advances and in major breakthroughs in understanding, preventing and treating brain disorders. The AI Center is housed in a modern building, a 5-minute walk from the main building.

The Paris Brain Institute invites expressions of interest from internationally recognized senior and mid-career researchers in the fields of AI, data science and computational sciences to address key challenges in brain health and neuroscience.

Purpose of this call

The objective of this expression of interest is to identify outstanding researchers whose expertise, scientific vision, leadership and management skills could contribute to strengthening and expanding the Institute’s capacities in AI, data science and computational sciences. This initiative is part of a strategic effort to anticipate future recruitment opportunities, develop new research directions, and expand our leadership in these areas. This call does not correspond to an open or funded position at this stage. The Institute is currently exploring the launch of a formal recruitment call in Fall 2026, with potential appointments starting in Fall 2027. About the Paris Brain Institute ecosystem

Duties

The Associate Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor is expected to develop her/his own research line in the subject area. Research should be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues at the department and SLU, as well as through national and international collaborations.

initiate the development of their own research group within the subject area

Context

Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) has become essential to managing the lifecycle of machine learning (ML) models, enabling continuous delivery, automation, and reproducibility. However, the rapid adoption of MLOps has advanced more quickly than the integration of robust security practices. Traditional software security practices—such as static analysis, dynamic scans, and vulnerability assessments—are well established, but ML pipelines present additional unique security concerns [1] [2]. For instance, ML systems face risks like adversarial attacks, model poisoning, training data compromise, drift, and injection attacks [3]. Additionally, privacy and compliance challenges—such as protecting personally identifiable information (PII) during data ingestion and model training—introduce further complexity that traditional security methods often overlook [4]. This suggests that machine learning models require security controls tailored to their lifecycle, from data collection to training, deployment, and monitoring. Current MLOps practices lack comprehensive built-in security mechanisms tailored to ML-specific risks and are fragmented: they either target specific threats, lack end-to-end traceability across the pipeline, or introduce prohibitive overhead that undermines the agility promised by MLOps. This has given rise to the emerging field of DevSecMLOps, which aims to extend the principles of DevSecOps [5, 6] to machine learning systems, ensuring both agility and security in AI-based applications.

The core problem is therefore the absence of a unified, systematic, and pipeline-wide approach to integrate security-by-design into MLOps pipelines. We lack frameworks that can:

Embed security requirements explicitly into ML workflows from the start,

Continuously enforce and monitor these requirements across all pipeline stages, and

Adapt to evolving threats without slowing down the pace of deployment.

Without such an approach, organizations risk deploying AI systems that are performant but fragile, exposing them to critical security and privacy breaches.

Objectives

The PhD will investigate the foundations and practical mechanisms of DevSecMLOps. The specifics of security in MLOps will mainly concern privacy. Users of ML-based solutions are legitimately concerned about the future of their data (e.g., where it is stored and who has access to it), and data anonymization is a key concern. The other facet of security (e.g., who is responsible in the event of a security problem?, how to ensure that ML models are robust against attacks and cannot be used maliciously) will also have to be taken into account. The research will focus on embedding security requirements directly into ML workflows, ensuring that threats such as data poisoning, adversarial manipulation, and privacy leakage are anticipated and mitigated early. It will also explore AI-driven automation to support continuous security checks, balancing the rigour of security with the agility of continuous delivery. The expected result is a methodological and technical framework that operationalizes security for ML pipelines, enabling organizations to deploy AI systems that are both performant and trustworthy.

Mission

The PhD candidate will conduct a comprehensive study of vulnerabilities across ML lifecycles, identify the security issues associated with current MLOPs practices, and analyze how existing DevSecOps principles can be extended to MLOps. The candidate will design security-by-design mechanisms tailored to ML workflows, from data ingestion and preprocessing to model training and deployment. These mechanisms should be developed, while acknowledging that those systems evolve rapidly. The candidate will also explore the use of machine learning for automating security checks, generating adversarial tests, and detecting pipeline anomalies. Finally, the proposed solutions will be validated through industrial case studies (from Softeam Group), demonstrating their effectiveness in mitigating threats while maintaining reproducibility and delivery speed.
