Yet in today&apos;s biomedical research ecosystem, the path to independence has become increasingly prolonged. Talented young scientists often spend many years in postdoctoral positions before having the opportunity to establish their own research programs.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;NIBS believes that exceptional scientists should have the opportunity to pursue independence earlier.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;The Independent Investigator Fellowship Program was established to accelerate the transition from doctoral training to scientific leadership. Rather than serving as another postdoctoral position, this program provides outstanding young scientists with the resources, mentorship, and intellectual freedom necessary to develop their own research vision and establish an independent scientific identity.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Our goal is to identify future leaders in biomedical research and provide them with the opportunity to begin leading independent research programs at an earlier stage of their careers.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Eligibility&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Applicants should have received their Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree within the past three years and should demonstrate exceptional scientific achievement, creativity, and potential for independent research leadership.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Applicants from all areas of modern biomedical research are encouraged to apply.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Fellowship Support&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Successful fellows will receive:&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;ul&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;Three years of internationally competitive salary and research support&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;Flexible funding of RMB 1.5 million per year, to be used at the fellow&apos;s discretion in support of their independent research program&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;Access to 16 state-of-the-art technology core facilities spanning transgenic animal resources, proteomics, imaging, biophysics, chemical biology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, AI-enabled research capabilities, and other advanced biomedical research technologies&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;Mentorship from senior faculty members selected by the fellow&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;Full scientific independence and ownership of their research accomplishments&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;The opportunity to recruit and supervise up to two graduate students&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;Subsidized housing&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&#9;&lt;li&gt;Comprehensive administrative and operational support for establishing and managing an independent research program&lt;/li&gt;&#10;&lt;/ul&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;An Environment Designed for Discovery&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;NIBS provides a uniquely supportive environment for young investigators. Our centralized research infrastructure allows fellows to pursue ambitious scientific questions without first building extensive technical capabilities. Fellows are encouraged to tackle important and challenging problems, develop original research directions, and establish collaborations across disciplines.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Faculty mentors are committed to helping fellows succeed while fully respecting their scientific independence. Fellows will receive guidance, advice, and access to institutional resources while retaining ownership of their ideas, discoveries, publications, and scientific achievements.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Importantly, the fellowship is not intended as an extension of postdoctoral training. The objective is to design early-warning tools based on heterogeneous data, including farm typology and sensor-derived indicators, and to study targeted intervention strategies capable of limiting epidemic amplification. The German-Israeli Max Planck-Weizmann Postdoctoral Programme thus supports scientific cooperation and interdisciplinary research in both countries.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Highlights of the programme&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Duration&lt;/strong&gt;: The Max Planck-Weizmann Postdoctoral Programme is designed for four years, with half of the time spent at the MPG and half at the WIS. The recommended time distribution between the institutes should not be less than one year. In exceptional cases, a shorter period at one institution may be considered, provided there is scientific justification and upon the committee&apos;s approval. The country split allows the postdocs to benefit from the expertise and resources of both institutions and to gain a comprehensive and broad research experience. Over four years, the postdocs will be able to conduct in-depth research and complex experiments, and thus publish relevant contributions in their respective fields.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Position&lt;/strong&gt;: The selected candidates will receive a four-year appointment, which will allow them to fully concentrate on their research projects. The employment contracts are concluded according to German guidelines and take into account the postdoc&apos;s level of experience.   <description>&lt;p&gt;Context&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) has become essential to managing the lifecycle of machine learning (ML) models, enabling continuous delivery, automation, and reproducibility. However, the rapid adoption of MLOps has advanced more quickly than the integration of robust security practices. Traditional software security practices&amp;mdash;such as static analysis, dynamic scans, and vulnerability assessments&amp;mdash;are well established, but ML pipelines present additional unique security concerns [1] [2]. For instance, ML systems face risks like adversarial attacks, model poisoning, training data compromise, drift, and injection attacks [3]. Additionally, privacy and compliance challenges&amp;mdash;such as protecting personally identifiable information (PII) during data ingestion and model training&amp;mdash;introduce further complexity that traditional security methods often overlook [4]. This suggests that machine learning models require security controls tailored to their lifecycle, from data collection to training, deployment, and monitoring. Current MLOps practices lack comprehensive built-in security mechanisms tailored to ML-specific risks and are fragmented: they either target specific threats, lack end-to-end traceability across the pipeline, or introduce prohibitive overhead that undermines the agility promised by MLOps. This has given rise to the emerging field of DevSecMLOps, which aims to extend the principles of DevSecOps [5, 6] to machine learning systems, ensuring both agility and security in AI-based applications.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;The core problem is therefore the absence of a unified, systematic, and pipeline-wide approach to integrate security-by-design into MLOps pipelines. We lack frameworks that can:&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Embed security requirements explicitly into ML workflows from the start,&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Continuously enforce and monitor these requirements across all pipeline stages, and&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Adapt to evolving threats without slowing down the pace of deployment.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Without such an approach, organizations risk deploying AI systems that are performant but fragile, exposing them to critical security and privacy breaches.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Objectives&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;The PhD will investigate the foundations and practical mechanisms of DevSecMLOps. The specifics of security in MLOps will mainly concern privacy. Users of ML-based solutions are legitimately concerned about the future of their data (e.g., where it is stored and who has access to it), and data anonymization is a key concern. The other facet of security (e.g., who is responsible in the event of a security problem?, how to ensure that ML models are robust against attacks and cannot be used maliciously) will also have to be taken into account. The research will focus on embedding security requirements directly into ML workflows, ensuring that threats such as data poisoning, adversarial manipulation, and privacy leakage are anticipated and mitigated early. It will also explore AI-driven automation to support continuous security checks, balancing the rigour of security with the agility of continuous delivery. The expected result is a methodological and technical framework that operationalizes security for ML pipelines, enabling organizations to deploy AI systems that are both performant and trustworthy.&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;Mission&lt;/p&gt;&#10;&#10;&lt;p&gt;The PhD candidate will conduct a comprehensive study of vulnerabilities across ML lifecycles, identify the security issues associated with current MLOPs practices, and analyze how existing DevSecOps principles can be extended to MLOps. The candidate will design security-by-design mechanisms tailored to ML workflows, from data ingestion and preprocessing to model training and deployment. These mechanisms should be developed, while acknowledging that those systems evolve rapidly. The candidate will also explore the use of machine learning for automating security checks, generating adversarial tests, and detecting pipeline anomalies.
