The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is seeking an accomplished scientist with expertise in condensed matter physics and quantum materials to join its Science team as a Program Fellow within the Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Systems Initiative. This role offers a unique opportunity to help launch the next phase of the Initiative, which supports discovery-driven research on quantum materials—solid materials characterized by novel quantum phases of matter and exotic cooperative behavior of electrons. Reporting to the Initiative Program Director and collaborating with the EPiQS team, the Program Fellow will play an important role in shaping the Initiative’s grant portfolio, advancing its strategic goals, and engaging the broader research community through a strict two‑year, fixed‑term appointment.

This role is based in Palo Alto, California, at the foundation’s main office. We operate under a hybrid work model that combines flexibility with meaningful in-person collaboration. Staff are required to work and reside within a reasonable driving distance of the Palo Alto office, and this role will work onsite in Palo Alto a minimum of four days a month. Additional on-site presence is required during the weeks of the May and November board meetings and periodically throughout the year as business needs require. A fully remote work arrangement is not available for this position.

Primary Responsibilities

Help design and run Initiative grant solicitations. Working closely with the Initiative team, the Fellow will:
- Draft the call for proposals, define application requirements, and ensure the submission process runs smoothly.
- Answer applicants’ questions in a timely manner.
- Help with outreach to ensure broad and inclusive participation.
- Help recruit expert reviewers, coordinate peer review, manage panels, and synthesize evaluations.
- Communicate decisions and provide feedback to applicants.
- Set up grants awarded through solicitations.
- Help track progress and impact, and incorporate lessons learned into subsequent solicitations.
Become deeply familiar with the Initiative’s overall strategic framework and contribute to its implementation.
Maintain solid knowledge of relevant fields and emerging trends.
Contribute to activities beyond grantmaking to help drive change in the Initiative’s focus areas (e.g., convening, facilitating, networking, communicating).
Help improve and implement effective monitoring and evaluation plans for the Initiative.
Coordinate with internal staff to complete grantmaking and monitoring processes.

Qualifications

While we understand that there are multiple paths to developing specific expertise, our ideal candidate will likely have the following:

PhD in condensed matter physics, with a substantive research expertise in quantum materials.
Additional expertise in another area of quantum science (e.g., quantum information, quantum sensing, quantum optics) is a plus.
Five-plus years of relevant post-PhD work is strongly preferred.
Experience leading a research program in an academic, industry, non-profit or government setting is a plus. Demonstrated capability of obtaining competitive research grants is preferred.
Solid understanding of the research enterprise at major universities and other leading research institutions in the U.S.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

The Faculty of Science and Medicine is inviting applications for the position of Professor of Data-Driven Materials Discovery at the Adolphe Merkle Institute (AMI). The AMI is a scientifically independent institute supported by a private foundation and integrated into the Faculty of Science and Medicine of the University of Fribourg. The successful candidate will have an exceptional track record of international research excellence in data-driven materials discovery, appropriate to their career stage. Their research programme should encompass artificial intelligence, machine learning and data-driven discovery methods applied to materials such as polymers, colloids, self-assembled systems, biomaterials and living materials. ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT

Faculty, Sections and Departments

The Faculty of Science and Medicine comprises a Science Section and a Medicine Section. The Science Section comprises six departments and six institutes, while the Medicine Section comprises five departments and two institutes (see https://www.unifr.ch/scimed/en/units/).

The faculty is presided over by the dean, who is elected by the Faculty Council for a three-year term. Each section is led by a president who is elected by the other professors for a two-year term. Major decisions are made by the Faculty Council and Section Councils, which comprise professors, teaching staff and student representatives.

The future appointee will join the AMI, which is part of the Science Section. The Science Section’s other six departments are:

The AMI currently comprises five chairs and two non-tenured junior groups, each conducting independent research. The AMI is presided over by a director. Major decisions are made by the AMI executive board, which consists of all professors.

Research focus

Teaching and Languages

The Adolphe Merkle Institute teaching differs from that of the other departments within the Faculty of Science and Medicine. While the departments are all responsible for specific courses of study, the AMI does not offer its own. AMI professors mainly teach at the master’s level in the chemistry, physics, medicine, and biology departments. Their teaching load amounts to half that of professors in other departments (i.e., three hours per week).

Teaching at the master’s and PhD level, where the new appointee is expected to teach, classes are usually taught in English. During term time, the appointee is expected to dedicate three hours per week to teaching. Candidates must be able to teach in English. Colloquial skills in French and German would be advantageous.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FUNDING

Department and location

The AMI is located in three dedicated buildings on the University of Fribourg’s Pérolles campus. The other Faculty of Science and Medicine buildings are within short walking distance. The campus is also home to the School of Engineering and Architecture. The appointee will have access to AMI’s infrastructure, as well as that of the Faculty of Science and Medicine.

Infrastructure

The AMI offers outstanding facilities for soft-matter nanoscience, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, confocal microscopy, well-equipped polymer chemistry laboratories, cell culture facilities, bioprinting and a clean room with lithography equipment. The AMI occupies three buildings, two refurbished and one newly built, dating from 2014.

Financial support

Funding of the successful candidate is highly flexible, with base funding provided by the Adolphe Merkle Foundation and the Canton of Fribourg. The position comes with a substantial start-up package. The appointee is expected to actively seek external funding to support their research and research group.

[Contrat doctoral] Development of heavy-metal-oxide glass fiber lasers for the mid-infrared optical window à ICMCB-CNRS

The mid-infrared (MIR) optical domain, supporting the fundamental vibrational modes of various biological and organic compounds, has garnered significant interest from both academic and industrial sectors, particularly for military, environmental, and medical applications. Within the fiber optic community, the MIR optical window spans from 2.5 to 20 μm, with only a few families of inorganic non-metallic glasses suitable for exploitation, such as heavy-metal-oxide, halide, and chalcogenide-based glasses.

For over a decade, a strong collaboration between the University of Bordeaux and Laval University (Quebec, Canada) has driven the development of robust heavy-metal-oxide glasses, specifically germano-gallate glasses. This partnership has resulted in several milestone achievements, including the fabrication of low-loss fibers, supercontinuum generation, and the ultrafast inscription of laser waveguides. This doctoral project, situated at the intersection of research and development, aims to achieve the first demonstration of efficient mid-infrared fiber lasers based on germano-gallate glass fibers. The project will be conducted as a cotutelle, with the candidate splitting their time between ICMCB in France and COPL in Canada. These laboratories represent a select group of institutions worldwide with the expertise to cover the entire process of fiber-based device creation, from fundamental fiber fabrication to integration into complex optical systems.

Throughout the PhD, the candidate will conduct an in-depth study of glass composition, synthesizing glass via melt-quenching, drawing fibers using the preform-to-fiber method, and characterizing both the fibers and glasses using a range of spectroscopic, thermal, and mechanical analyses. In collaboration with LumIR Lasers company, the candidate will also optimize fiber design through numerical simulations and practical experiments.

Synthesis of new compositions of heavy oxide glasses and purification of materials

Fiber drawing of materials for infrared and mid-infrared.

Physicochemical and structural characterizations (Raman, NMR, luminescence, AFM, Electron microscopies: SEM, TEM, EDS, Auger).

Optical characterizations and laser functionality tests.

Profil recherché :
Candidate profile The candidate should have background in inorganic chemistry and materials science. The candidate should have also interest in optics, photonics, and laser technology, and excellent analytical skills. Proficiency in relevant software, problem-solving skills, and effective communication abilities in both English and French are also required.
