We are offering an interesting PhD position – Learning Tailored Iterative Algorithms for Accelerating AC Power Flow Computations (HDS-LEE graduate school)

Your Job:

Energy systems engineering heavily relies on efficient numerical algorithms. In this HDS‑LEE project, we will use machine learning (ML) along with data from previously solved problem instances to solve new, yet similar, instances more efficiently than with general purpose algorithms such as Newton`s method. In particular, we aim to develop a neural network architecture that will allow us to accelerate solving AC power flow (AC‑PF) computations, potentially facilitating real‑time contingency analysis, rapid design‑space exploration, and on‑line operational optimization of power systems.

Your tasks in detail:

Become familiar with our previously developed neural network superstructure for learning iterative algorithms
Extend the superstructure to tackle AC-PF problems of different complexities and assess its convergence in inference
Investigate scaling and performance bottlenecks
Explore hybrid ML-classical approaches, the application of meta learning, and the integration of convex optimization layers
Increase inference efficiency (e.g., GPU acceleration) and assess the applicability domain of learned algorithms
Publish and present your results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences
Supervise student theses

Your Profile:

Excellent Master`s degree with a strong academic background in computational engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering or a related field
Strong background in numerical methods and machine learning
Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, Julia, C++, …)
Good analytical skills
Good organizational skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Assistant Professor - Paleoclimate/Paleoceanography/Sediment Geochemistry

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), Scripps Website at the University of California San Diego invites applications for a full-time 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. With this recruitment we are specifically searching for candidates who integrate marine observations and geology or geochemistry methodologies to address research questions in paleoceanography, paleoclimate, or geological oceanography. We have a particular interest in attracting candidates with expertise in the geochemical analysis of marine, terrestrial or ice core archives, to enhance existing institutional programs in oceanography and climate sciences. Data-driven life science (DDLS) uses data, computational methods and artificial intelligence to study biological systems and processes at all levels, from molecular structures and cellular processes to human health and global ecosystems. The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), coordinated by SciLifeLab, aims to recruit and train the next-generation of data-driven life scientists and to create globally leading computational and data science capabilities in Sweden. The program is funded with a total of 3.3 billion SEK (about 350 MUSD) over 12 years from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation.

The DDLS program funds 50 high-profile young group leaders (“Fellows”), over 210 postdoctoral positions and has established a research school for 260 PhDs, including industry PhDs and postdocs. Fellows are recruited to the 11 participating host universities/organizations, but brought together under the DDLS program, which has four strategic areas: cell and molecular biology, evolution and biodiversity, precision medicine and diagnostics, epidemiology and biology of infection. At the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, we are looking to fill the position as DDLS fellow in Data driven evolution and biodiversity.

Subject area

Data-driven evolution and biodiversity concerns research that takes advantage of the massive data streams offered by techniques such as high-throughput sequencing of genomes and biomes, continuous recording of video and audio in the wild, high-throughput imaging of biological specimens, and large-scale remote monitoring of organisms or habitats. The applicant is expected to have a strong computational focus on innovative development and application of novel data-driven methods relying on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or other computational techniques.

The subject area concerns research in the general area of evolution and biodiversity with a strong computational profile. This research subject area aims to lead to innovative development and/or application of novel data-driven methods relying on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or other computational techniques. The specific subject area is focused on the ecological and evolutionary processes generating and shaping the diversity of plants, animals and/or microorganisms and how these influence ecosystems. Diversity should be interpreted in the broad sense and include taxonomic, genomic, and functional aspects. The subject area can encompass variable scales of biological inquiry, from molecules and genes to populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes, and biomes in aquatic or terrestrial environments.

Duties

The Associate Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor is expected to develop her/his own research line in the subject area. Research should be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues at the department and SLU, as well as through national and international collaborations.

In addition, the holder of the position is also expected to:

apply for external research funding in competition and publish scientific articles
initiate the development of their own research group within the subject area
participate in postgraduate education as a co-supervisor
teach at first, second and third cycle level
receive training in higher education pedagogy
collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the industry and surrounding society.

Swedish and English are used in parallel at the departments. The holder of the position should be able to perform most of their tasks in English. However, as a public authority, the university has Swedish as its main language according to the requirements of the Language Act. Non-Swedish-speaking staff members are expected to, within four years of first being employed, have sufficient knowledge of Swedish to understand information in Swedish. The department will support the holder of the position to achieve this.

Qualifications

Eligible for employment as Associate Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor are candidates who hold a PhD or have equivalent academic qualifications. Priority will be given to candidates who have received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than seven years before the application deadline. The assessment criteria for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.

The assessment criteria for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor shall be the degree of the research expertise required as a qualification for employment.

Furthermore, the assessment includes evaluating the applicant’s ability to independently develop a line of research within the subject area, and to qualify for promotion to Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor during the employment period.

The position will be offered to the eligible candidate who, following a qualitative comprehensive assessment is deemed to have the best qualifications set to conduct and develop the duties in question, and contribute to the positive development of the organisation.

Lecturer for Systems Hub Core Course

Systems Hub is recruiting a Lecturer with primary responsibility for teaching SYSH5000 (Model-Based Systems Engineering), and with the flexibility to contribute to the teaching of other related courses as needed. About SYSH5000 course

SYSH5000(Model-Based Systems Engineering) is a Hub core course for all SYSH research postgraduate students and an elective option for students from other Hubs. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a contemporary systems engineering methodology that uses conceptual models for communication between system architects, designers, developers, and stakeholders. Object-Process Methodology (OPM) is an MBSE language and methodology for constructing domain-independent conceptual models of all kinds of systems. The course provides students with basic knowledge and tools for MBSE, focusing on conceptual modeling of systems, giving learners a competitive advantage over their peers.

Key Responsibilities

1. Plan, design and deliver SYSH5000 for research postgraduate students each regular term;

2. Mentor student groups in SYSH5000 and oversee their performance and assessment;

3. Promote SYSH5000 across Hubs/Thrusts and establish it as a widely recognized course within and beyond the university;

4. Contribute, as appropriate, to the teaching and development of other related courses in the Hub.

Qualification of Candidates

Applicants must have a PhD degree in relevant fields. The appointees are expected to establish an independent and internationally competitive research program. Teaching responsibilities include postgraduate and undergraduate courses.
English serves as the language of instruction and administration at HKUST (GZ). Applicants are expected to be proficient in English.
Senior faculty members are expected to have demonstrated commitment to teaching and strong performance in related areas, as well as experience and preparedness in designing interdisciplinary curricula and programs. Additionally, they should have a track record of leadership in both research and service to the academic community and/or the public.
