The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is conducting a search for the AAS Editor in Chief. The AAS Editor in Chief is responsible for developing and implementing a long-term editorial strategy for the Society’s journals portfolio and ensuring the portfolio’s continued excellence.

The AAS’s five community-owned, peer-reviewed, open-access journals collectively received more than 9,000 submissions and published more than 6,500 manuscripts in 2025. The journals boast a diverse and international authorship, and they consistently feature some of the most-read and most-cited research results in the astronomical sciences. The Editor in Chief will oversee this prestigious portfolio and lead an international editorial board of more than 50 PhD scientists.

The Editor in Chief will work with the AAS Director of Scholarly Publishing and staff to efficiently manage workflow through editorial review processes, to maintain and motivate a high standard of performance among editorial staff, and to adjudicate any disputes that may arise during manuscript review. They will also work with the AAS Chief Executive Officer, the AAS Publications Committee, the AAS publishing team, and outside partners to develop opportunities for innovation, and they will represent and promote AAS publications at national and international conferences, including the two annual AAS meetings.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the physical sciences and editorial experience with scientific scholarly publishing, complemented by outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. They will demonstrate high ethical standards and the ability to engage thoughtfully with a diverse, international community of authors and reviewers. A commitment to editorial excellence, sound judgment, emotional intelligence, and professionalism is essential.

This is a full-time position open to applicants with a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field. The physical location of the Editor in Chief may be at the AAS Headquarters in Washington, DC, at any institution that provides appropriate professional resources, or may be fully remote.

The AAS Editor in Chief is responsible for overseeing the editorial direction and quality of all AAS scholarly journals (the peer-reviewed Astrophysical Journal, Astrophysical Journal Letters, Astrophysical Journal Supplement, Astronomical Journal, and Planetary Science Journal, as well as Research Notes of the AAS and the Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society). This oversight includes setting the strategic direction for the journals in partnership with the AAS Publications Committee, the Board of Trustees, and the AAS Director of Scholarly Publishing (DSP); managing the peer-review process and the Lead and Scientific Editors; working closely with the AAS publishing staff and our publishing partner, IOP Publishing, to efficiently manage workflow through editorial review processes and production; adjudicating author/reviewer complaints; making final decisions on all content published while upholding the journal’s reputation within the scholarly community; and ensuring the journal maintains the highest standards.

Qualifications

PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field.
Strong publication record in high-impact journals in the field of astronomy or closely related disciplines.
Experience with editorial function for peer-reviewed scholarly journals, preferably in astronomy or closely related discipline.
Ability to manage a large team (~50) of editors and make timely decisions to facilitate their work.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, good analytic abilities, and a strong commitment to maintaining high interpersonal standards.

Responsibilities

Editorial Vision and Strategy

Set the journals’ editorial vision, scope, and focus, aligning with current research trends.
Develop and implement editorial policies to ensure high-quality submissions and rigorous peer review.
Identify potential thematic issues or special features for the journals.
With publishing partners, the Publications Committee, and AAS publishing staff, strategically identify, develop, and deploy enhancements for the journals and the peer-review process to support the strategic goals of the AAS and of the AAS journals.
With the AAS Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial and Operating Officer, and DSP, ensure the journals meet the financial goals set by the Board of Trustees.
Adapt the journals and maintain international leadership in a rapidly evolving scholarly publishing landscape.

Peer Review

Ensure the proper evaluation of submitted manuscripts for relevance, originality, and quality, and make all final publication decisions, delegating those decisions appropriately to the Lead Editors.
Through the Lead Editors, ensure the proper assignment of manuscripts to appropriate Scientific Editors and reviewers based on expertise, while avoiding potential conflicts of interest.
Oversee the peer-review process — resolving any conflicts or concerns raised by reviewers, authors, or editors — and the individual performance of all editors.
Maintain high standards for a fair, respectful, and speedy peer-review experience.
Manage the editorial workflow through the AAS DSP, ensuring timely review and publication schedules.
If applicable, serve as a Scientific or Lead Editor within an appropriate corridor.
Assess requests to the AAS Publication Support Fund.

Editorial Team Leadership

Recruit and manage a diverse and geographically dispersed editorial board of experts in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, and related disciplines and subdisciplines.
Provide guidance and support to editorial board and staff on editorial policies and standards, including providing training in diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the publishing process.
Represent the editorial team at Publications Committee and Board of Trustee meetings, including preparing and presenting reports as needed.

Maintain regular communications with the author and reader communities via timely editorials and other updates.

Director (f/m/x) at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Biotechnology (IBG‑1) as part of a joint leadership team at the Jülich site combined with a

University Professorship (W3) in Microbial Biotechnology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf At Forschungszentrum Jülich, IBG-1 drives the advancement of biotechnology for a bio-based circular economy. Its main research areas include microbial and enzymatic conversion processes as well as bioprocess development. IBG-1 is part of the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences, where Forschungszentrum Jülich brings together its expertise in biotechnology, bioinformatics, plant sciences, and the agrosphere for interdisciplinary research on the sustainable use of natural resources.

The successful candidate should be an internationally recognized leader in the field of applied microbiology. As director, they will lead the institute’s research on microbial cell factories that enable the sustainable production of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and materials based on renewable carbon sources or waste streams as sustainable alternatives to petrochemical synthesis. Of particular interest are, for example, biological processes for plastic recycling. The research is expected to make use of methods from metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and adaptive laboratory evolution, as well as automation opportunities offered by the Jülich Biofoundry. These research activities represent a key component of Forschungszentrum Jülich’s bioeconomy strategy and are closely linked to bioprocess development and bioinformatics.

As Director at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Biotechnology (IBG-1), which is combined with a professorial appointment at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, the successful candidate will lead the institute division as part of a joint leadership team together with other directors and manage its research portfolio. The candidate must demonstrate strong and inspiring leadership qualities, as well as the experience and ability to provide new impetus and to advance future research directions in line with the research strategy and mission of Forschungszentrum Jülich in the field of the bioeconomy.

The appointee is expected to collaborate closely with other areas within Forschungszentrum Jülich and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, as well as to actively participate in ongoing and planned research consortia at both institutions.

The appointment includes a teaching obligation on the subject of “Microbial Biotechnology” of two semester hours per week at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.

Special Funding & Duties
This recruitment is part of the university-wide effort to increase research activities on campus as a University for International Research Excellence. As such, selected individuals will be provided with the following funding and are expected to meet the following duties:

Funding:

Start-up Fund: To facilitate a smooth research start, a start-up fund of up to 10 million JPY will be allocated in the first fiscal year of employment. The final maximum amount will be determined based on a review of the submitted "Research Activity Plan” in Required Documents.

Annual Paid Leave

Additional Information Educational & administrative duties

In the past five years, presiding over the general program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, or presiding over the project of National Social Science Foundation of China, or won the second prize or above of National Teaching and Scientific Research Achievement Award (with the certificate of the award), or won the scientific research achievement award at or above the provincial and ministerial level (ranked in the top 2 of the first prize, and ranked in the top 1 of the second prize), or won the teaching achievement award at or above the provincial and ministerial level (ranked in the top 2 of the special prize, and ranked in the first 1 of the first prize); independently or as the first author in 8 or more papers published in domestic and foreign high-level journals in the field of this discipline, including at least 2 papers published in authoritative journals at home or abroad. Those who have outstanding representative achievements in teaching and scientific research or those who are in short supply of specialized talents can appropriately reduce the requirements on the number of papers. Overseas talents are not subject to the requirements of projects and awards.

Category F:
1) With doctoral degree, associate professor. In the past five years, presiding over the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects, or presided over the National Social Science Foundation of China (NSSCF) projects, or won the second prize or above of the National Teaching and Research Achievement Award (with a certificate of the award), or won the scientific research achievement awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels (the first prize ranked in the top 7, the second prize ranked in the top 5, and the third prize ranked in the top 3 ); independently or as the first author in 5 or more papers published in domestic and foreign high-level journals in the field of this discipline, including at least 2 papers published in authoritative journals at home or abroad.

2) Doctoral degree holders or those who have been engaged in postdoctoral research for more than two years in famous universities or academic institutions at home or abroad, who have reached the equivalent level of associate professors by peer experts' evaluation. They should have published five or more papers in domestic and foreign high-level journals in their own disciplines independently or as the first author in the past four years, including at least one paper in a domestic or foreign authoritative journal. Domestic postdoctoral fellows shall preside over two projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China or National Social Science Foundation of China or provincial and ministerial level projects. For those who have outstanding teaching and scientific research achievements or those who are in shortage of specialized talents, the requirement on the number of papers can be reduced appropriately. Overseas talents are not subject to project requirements.

General Faculty:

Possessing a doctoral degree. Generally, candidates are required to have independently published or been the first author of at least three academic papers in core journals within the past three years. For general faculty positions in disciplines with a high student-to-faculty ratio, the university's Talent Work Leading Group will conduct a comprehensive assessment and may appropriately relax the requirements for academic background and research publications.

(II). Benefits

1.Metasequoia Scholars

The Metasequoia Scholars are on an annual salary system (agreed salary, before tax), and are given all-round support in terms of settlement and house purchase subsidy, scientific research start-up funds, laboratory office conditions, transitional housing, and enrollment quota for postgraduates and postdocs.

Category A: The annual salary is not less than 1.2 million yuan, and we will provide generous settling-in fee and start-up funds for scientific research. According to the discipline development plan, the university will provide good working conditions and living treatment for all talents. Specific requirements and treatment will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Category B: The annual salary is not less than 900 thousands yuan, granting a settlement fee of 300 thousands yuan and a house purchase subsidy of 1.5-2.5 million yuan. Provide start-up funds for scientific research, 3-5 million yuan for natural sciences and 1-2 million yuan for humanities and social sciences. Provide necessary research and office conditions, and equip research assistants as needed.

Category C: The annual salary is not less than 900 thousands yuan, granting a settlement fee of 200 thousands yuan and a house purchase subsidy of 1-1.6 million yuan. Provide start-up funds for scientific research, 1-2 million yuan for natural sciences and 500 thousands to1 million yuan for humanities and social sciences. Provide necessary scientific research and office conditions.

Category D: The annual salary is not less than 350 thousands yuan, granting a settlement fee of 200 thousands yuan and a house purchase subsidy of 700 thousands to 1 million yuan. Provide start-up funds for scientific research, 800 thousands -1 million yuan for natural sciences and 400 to 500 thousands yuan for humanities and social sciences. Provide necessary scientific research and office conditions.

2. Metasequoia Talents

During the employment period, according to the state and relevant regulations, they will get salary, welfare and life treatment of the corresponding position, and will enjoy the corresponding support such as settlement fee, house purchase subsidy, scientific research start-up funds, and swing housing.

Category E: Provide settlement fee of 100 thousands yuan and housing subsidy of 600 thousands to 1 million yuan. Provide start-up funds for scientific research, 400 to 500 thousands yuan for natural sciences and 200 to 300 thousands yuan for humanities and social sciences. Assist in solving problems such as spouse's work and children's schooling.

Category F: Provide settlement fee of 100 thousands yuan and housing subsidy of 300 to 600 yuan. Provide start-up funds for scientific research, 200 to 300 thousands yuan for natural sciences and 100 to 150 thousands yuan for humanities and social sciences.

3.General Faculty

Granting a subsidy of up to 300 thousands yuan for house purchase; providing a research start-up fund of up to 150 thousands yuan for natural sciences and up to 100 thousands yuan for humanities and social sciences.

4.Foreign Talents

Full-time foreigners applying for the corresponding level of talent will be employed in accordance with the appointment system and enjoy the annual salary system (the annual salary includes the personal out-of-pocket portion of the social insurance for medical care, work injury, pension, maternity, unemployment, etc., but excludes insurance for spouses and children). According to the length of the appointment, the university will provide the corresponding annual salary and scientific research start-up funds, and the specific treatment will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
